A lightning-split tree heals on Leap Day.

365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds – one trip around the sun.  But the calendar has an 365 even days.  So after 100 years, the calendar falls behind 24 days.  How to make up the difference?

Add an extra day on this schedule (Thanks to Pope Gregory fixing the brilliant calendar of Julius Caesar):  Make a February 29th if:

The year is evenly divisible by 4;
If the year can be evenly divided by 100, it is NOT a leap year, unless;
The year is also evenly divisible by 400. Then it is a leap year.

So while you renters and mortgage payers are enjoying your “free” day this year, consider this offering from Sound Beacher, showing how an old “wolf tree” oak, evidently split by lighting, that has been bolted back together with long threaded rods, recently renewed.

The earlier bolting up  has grown over, judging from the bark pattern scars:

With this mild winter we’ve been having, the golf course is doing a good business.  While hitting the links, I was taken by the trees.  A few of my golf balls were too.

What is that in the tree?

Bolts in the trunk?

Four long rods hold the tree together, like long surgical screws.
